Experimental investigation on flow structures of steadily translating low-aspect-ratio wings in low Reynolds number flow

چکیده
In recent decades, Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) have been a hot topic for their promising future. But the promotions of MAVs are hindered by short endurances. To solve this problem, inspirations brought from migratory butterflies who utilize ‘flapping-gliding’ skill during long-distance migration to improve flight efficiency. The butterfly’s gliding flights, which can be simplified considering steadily translating fixed wings, drawn high attentions. Previous studies mainly focus on aerodynamics low-aspect-ratio wings at Re ≈ 105 via force measurements. However, few experimental measured 3D flow fields. Consequently, underlying lift-to-drag ratio mechanisms in butterfly-shaped still not clear. shed new light structures around were captured and investigated detail.

On the mechanism of high-incidence lift generation for steadily translating low-aspect-ratio wings
High-incidence lift generation via flow reattachment is studied. Different reattachment mechanisms are distinguished, with dynamic manoeuvres and tip vortex downwash being separate mechanisms. We focus on the latter mechanism, which is strictly available to finite wings, and isolate it by considering steadily translating wings. The tip vortex downwash provides a smoother merging of the flow at ...
متن کاملEffects of Sideslip on the Aerodynamics of Low-Aspect-Ratio Low-Reynolds-Number Wings
The growing interest in micro aerial vehicles has brought attention to the need for an improved understanding of the aerodynamics of low-aspect-ratio wings at lowReynolds numbers. In this study, flat plate wings with rectangular and tapered planforms were fabricated with aspect ratios of 0.75, 1, 1.5, and 3, and the aerodynamic loading was measured at Reynolds numbers between 5 10 and 1 10. Sur...
متن کاملFlutter Analysis of a Low Aspect Ratio Swept- Back Trapezoidal Wing at Low Subsonic Flow
A linear, aeroelastic analysis of a low aspect ratio swept back trapezoidal wing modeled as a cantilever plate is presented. An analytical and numerical formulation for both the aerodynamic forcing and structural response of the wing was developed. The analytical model uses a three dimensional time domain vortex lattice aerodynamic method. A Rayleigh-Ritz approach has been used to transfer equa...
متن کاملThree-dimensional flows around low-aspect-ratio flat-plate wings at low Reynolds numbers
Three-dimensional flows over impulsively translated low-aspect-ratio flat plates are investigated for Reynolds numbers of 300 and 500, with a focus on the unsteady vortex dynamics at post-stall angles of attack. Numerical simulations, validated by an oil tow-tank experiment, are performed to study the influence of aspect ratio, angle of attack and planform geometry on the wake vortices and the ...

The longitudinal aerodynamics of micro aerial vehicles, although not fully understood, have been the subject of several studies in recent years; however, littleworkhasbeendone to investigate the lateral loading. In this experiment, flat-plate wings with rectangular planforms of aspect ratios AR 0.75, 1, 1.5, and 3 and tapered planforms of λ 0.75, 0.5, and 0.25 were placed in the wind tunnel at ...
